Look, we aren’t too proud to admit that the Wii is a lot of fun. It’s a great system for the whole family, since most games are fun and easy to play. However, once in a while we’d like to tap into our inner manliness and play some of the more complicated titles, like Madden NFL 10, which until now was a lackluster experience on the Wii. Why? Mainly because despite the innovative Wiimote, spots game such as Madden NFL just haven’t measured up to the more button-heavy, joystick rendering capabilities of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 2 and 3. Oh, and the graphics are sorta weak on the Wii too.
But, maybe this football attachment is a sign that things are really changing. With Microsoft’s Project Natal just around the corner and the new Wii MotionPlus attachment already out, and also a rumor of a newer Wii (with HD, a hard drive and better internet browsing) coming in a couple years, it’s possible the way we play video games might really morph into a more authentic experience. At least, as authentic as gamers want to get. Some might prefer the lazy-butt style of gaming, where they don’t have to move from the couch and can sip coke and eat Wheat Thins all day, but for the rest of us, the idea of actually simulating a throw, hitting a golf ball or even swinging a bat and tennis racket sounds really appealing.
But then again, we aren’t quite there yet. Systems still need to progress. There are hints however, such as this Wiimote accessory that turns your controller into a football. (We scoffed at first but this actually looks kinda cool.) We have no idea how it works nor where to get one, and at this point in the game, we don’t really care. We’re just glad to see the direction things are trending and hope within the next few years, gaming will encompass more true-to-life movements. That’s good news for us, bad news for da’ couch potatoes.
